We’re so excited about Valentina Freifeld joining our Well Garden Team of teachers. We took her class last week and little did we know what was coming. The music went on, we were up on our feet swinging our arms around, rolling around on the floor, jumping, dancing (badly) and generally just having a damn good time. It didn’t feel like it at the time but the next day, my stomach muscles could definitely tell that they had done some work. It’s safe to say, Valentina brings high energy, upbeat music and creativity to her dynamic and invigorating Pilates classes! Having practised various styles of dance, yoga, karate, physical theatre and Pilates for more than 20 years, Valentina incorporates different elements to create a uniquely vibrant class that will leave a spring in your step and a smile on your face. We meet her to get the down-low on what inspires her, her love for teaching and her passion for dance….
What inspired you to become a teacher?
The sheer joy and pleasure of living when I dance and move! Pilates was a method that I learned as a therapeutic art form and I noticed the benefits of it immediately. I am also fascinated by the connection between the body and mind, it is so easy to lose connection with our bodies when we are working long days, especially in front of a computer, and I want to help people regain the balance that is so vital to our wellbeing.
What do you love most about teaching?
I love helping students gain an understanding of the importance of physical health in relation to mental health, and helping them to improve their quality of life through Pilates and restorative and creative therapeutic exercises.
What are the benefits of your classes?
My classes are uptempo, invigorating and fun! They can help relieve stress and anxiety, improve the condition of your heart and lungs, increase muscular strength, endurance and motor fitness, and increase aerobic fitness. They can also help with weight management, reduce the risk of osteoporosis, help with coordination, agility, spatial awareness and increased physical confidence as well as improved mental functioning.
What does your practise mean to you?
It’s a journey where I am constantly learning, creating and discovering
How has becoming a teacher changed your outlook on life?
It gives me discipline and responsibility because I am working with others – it feels like a gift every time I finish my class.
What do you find is the most difficult thing about your practise?
Blending coordination, with stability, and just letting go…!
Have you been to any retreats, events or festivals that you’d recommend to your students?
The best place is… in my own room dancing just for the pleasure of it!
What do you like to do when you’re not in the studio?
I’m studying art therapy and bioenergetics and I love dancing tango, painting, writing, travelling, playing with cats and meeting my friends!
