Acupuncture is a holistic approach to health based on over 2,000 years of development and refinement in the Far East. The tradition is as much about the maintenance of health as the management of disease. Although sometimes described merely as a means of pain relief, traditional acupuncture is actually used to treat people with a wide range of illnesses. Its focus is on improving the overall wellbeing of the patient, rather than the isolated treatment of specific symptoms. The skill of an acupuncturist lies in their ability to make a traditional diagnosis from what is often a complex pattern of disharmony. The exact pattern and degree of disharmony is unique to each individual and so following diagnosis, the acupuncturist puts together a personalised treatment plan.

According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body’s motivating energy – known as qi – moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of meridians (channels) beneath the skin. The flow of qi can be disturbed, depleted or blocked by many factors, physical, mental and emotional, leading to pain and illness. By inserting fine needles into carefully selected points along the channels of energy, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body’s own healing response and help to restore its natural balance.

Acupuncture is a widely used form of health care in many countries across the world. Acupuncture is listed by the World Health Organisation as helpful for many conditions. If you have a particular health problem and would like to ask some questions, one of our acupuncture practitioners, Guisi or Sarah will be happy to talk to you.

Ayurveda is a science of life (Ayur = life,Veda = science or knowledge). It offers a natural wisdom to help people stay healthy. Providing guidelines on ideal daily and seasonal routines, diet, behaviour and proper use of our senses, Ayurveda reminds us that health is the balanced and dynamic integration between our environment, body, mind, and spirit.

We can find the origins of medicinal herbs in all the ancient cultures: herbs are the natural medicines we have been using for more than 7000 years in prevention and healing. As part of nature, we try to come back to our natural state of happiness and health. Nowadays we have the knowledge to understand why the herbs act in specific small (molecular) parts of our system helping us to find relief and solve medical problems. This knowledge should not be separate from the nature, that is we we include it in the holistic approach, making formulations with herbs and understanding how their main components (active principles) have a unique specific target in our entire body helping us to heal.

Maria will take a full and detailed case History adding Ayurvedic diagnosis, which means your constitution in terms of energy and the combinations of the different elements of your nature, known as Prakrutti. Once you start to understand your own constitution and your tendencies, you will be able to prevent a lot of ailments materialising from the outset. If you already have a disease or complaint, known as Vikrutti, this is seen as the product of the imbalance in you.

Maria diagnoses using both the medical western and the Ayurvedic points of view. The treatments are orientated to bring balance, to relieve you from specific conditions and to learn how to take better care of yourself. For this, Maria suggests medical herbal formulas as treatments plus some graduated changes in your life style, where you need it and taking in to consideration your likes/dislikes, beliefs and core emotions.

The Bowen Technique gently encourages your body to heal itself.

A Bowen treatment consists of a series of small, light and very precise moves over soft tissue, made by the practitioner’s fingers or thumbs, with frequent pauses for the body to benefit from each set. These moves stimulate a release of tension, which may be felt throughout the body. This often results in relief from pain as the body relaxes and realigns, and is just the beginning of a healing process which may continue to work for up to ten days.

It may help with sports/accidental injuries, chronic pain, postural imbalances, frozen shoulder, RSI; problems associated with breathing, digestion, circulation and other body systems; bedwetting; fertility challenges; migraines, headaches and many other conditions. It may help to expedite healing, whatever the body is trying to deal with.

The first treatment will take between 75 and 90 minutes, but costs the same as subsequent treatments, which are normally completed within the hour.

Friends and family: two people at the same time. The first treatment will need to be an hour each but subsequent treatments will be one hour between two people. Because of the breaks between moves, you will both get just as much attention as a single client gets in the same time.

We each have an estimated 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts a day – unfortunately, many of
them are the same thoughts we had yesterday, last week, and last year. The mind tends to
get stuck in repetitive thought loops that squeeze out the possibility for new ideas and
inspiration.

Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH) is the combination of Cognitive Behavioural
Therapy (CBT) and Hypnosis. With CBT, we view problems and symptoms as stemming
from unhealthy beliefs and thoughts. With the cognitive approach, you take on the role of a
detective and examine the problematic beliefs and thoughts, which you are holding on to
so tightly.

When CBT is combined with the relaxation of hypnosis, the new, more helpful, way of
thinking is integrated at a deeper, unconscious level which enables the changes to take
place more quickly. Hypnosis is a powerful practice for going beyond habitual, conditioned
thought patterns into a state of expanded awareness. We connect to what is known as the
field of infinite possibilities or pure potentiality, and we open to new insights, intuition, and
ideas.

When either approach is used alone, it’s reasonably effective, but when used in
conjunction, the effect is dynamic. Hypnosis helps people to feel better, but unless the
faulty thinking is changed, when faced with the same or similar situation, the unwanted
response will remain and re-emerge over time. CBH is designed to help a person get
better.

Cranial osteopathy is a refined form of osteopathic treatment, which uses very delicate manipulative pressure to encourage your innate healing abilities. Like all osteopathy, it views your body as a self-correcting, self-regulating mechanism that’s constantly striving to establish optimal wellbeing.  Although often sought by adults for back, neck and joint problems, its delicate, non-invasive nature allows treatment of all ages, in all states of health.

The practitioner takes various gentle holds around your body, especially your head and sacrum (the large triangular bone at the base of the spine). Often lasting a few minutes, these enable him or her, to detect how your ‘inner physician’ is working to correct your problems, and then to stimulate that natural rebalancing process through very subtle movements. These subtle holds sometimes result in a temporary worsening of symptoms, generally followed by noticeable improvement after one or two days.

Homoeopathy is a holistic and gentle form of healing based on the principle of ‘like cures like’ – that whatever can harm can also cure.

Put simply, tiny, safe doses of a remedy are prescribed when someone exhibits the symptoms that a larger dose of the substance that the remedy is made from would have produced in a healthy person.

Take for example Coffea, which is a remedy taken from coffee – a substance which stimulates the nervous system and causes sleeplessness in some people. Coffea taken in tiny quantities has a very soothing effect on the nerves and can actually promote sleep.

As Homeopaths, we are very focused on finding the cause of your health issue and believe that there is a strong link between your mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.

Ayurvedic Yoga Massage

This unique style of bobywork combines deep tissue oil massage using ayurvedic herbal powder with assisted yoga stretches and coordinated breathworkThe deep tissue massage warms and relaxes the muscles, dissolving physical tension, while the assisted stretches and breathing realign the body and stimulate the natural flow of energy.  This technique will help dissolve physical and emotional blocks, eliminate toxins from the body, promote correct posture, improve respiratory patterns and leave you with a deep sense of well-being and natural harmony

Ayurvedic Yoga Massage continues to be developed by it’s creator, Master Kusum Modak in Pune, India.  Now in her 80’s, she has dedicated her life to combining her knowledge of Ayurveda, Traditional Ayurvedic Massage and Yoga learned directly from BKS Iyengar, to create this unique approach to massage.

Both hands and feet can be used in the massage dependent on the individual need of the recipient. There are many deep massage techniques to warm the body and relieve tension. After warming the body, stretches are combined according to the condition and necessity of the client.

Ayurvedic Yoga Massage can be performed on a massage table or on a comfortable mat on the floor allowing the therapist to perform the full and flowing range of yoga stretches.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage, as its name says, focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It is designed to reach the deep sections of thick muscles, specifically the individual muscle fibres.

Using deep muscle compression and friction along the grain of the muscle, the purpose of deep tissue massage is to unstick the fibres of the muscles and release both toxins and deeply held tension points. Specific hand positions and strokes are used to respond to various tissues while breath and movement techniques are employed to release muscular congestion. It helps to loosen muscle tissues, release toxins from muscles and get blood and oxygen circulating properly. It is both corrective and therapeutic. It is beneficial for many physical problems, including sports injuries and chronic pain. Because it works very deeply, emotional issues can also be addressed, when these have been stored in the body.

Pregnancy Massage
(Clients must be at least 12 wks pregnant)

Pregnancy massage is a form of Holistic Massage tailored to the needs of your pregnancy.Holistic Massage means treating the ‘whole’ of the individual –  Mind, Body & Spirit, which includes the new little mind, body & spirit of your baby. The massage is tailored to the needs of the individual, taking in to account your  history, your emotional state and any pain or injuries. Rather than performing the same set sequence of massage techniques on every single client, holistic massage means assessing the clients needs and then tailoring the massage for your personal fulfilment.

Pregnancy Massage is done in side lying position on a massage table and sometimes on your back with the table slightly raised.  For part of the massage you will also be seated comfortably  on a stool and leaning over the massge table and lots of pillows , so i can work on your back.  You will have plenty of cushions and pillows to support you where ever you need them.

Using techniques from Swedish and Deep Tissue Massage, Holistic massage is given using 100% Natural Cold Pressed Oil applied directly on to the skin.  The client wears their underwear (removal of bra is optional) and is mostly covered by warm towels; one part of the body is uncovered, massaged, and then covered up before moving on to another part of the body.

Abdominal Sacral Massage

An abdominal and sacral massage (also known as fertility massage) concentrates on the core of your body where most of the major internal organs are, including your reproductive and digestive systems. Because of its effects on these organs, this type of bodywork promotes circulation not only to the local area but also to your entire body.

For women, this massage is particularly important because it benefits the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes, therefore promoting hormonal balance. It helps to correct misalignment of the uterus, assists the body in eliminating old stagnant blood and gently breaks down adhesions and scar tissue. In various healing and medical traditions (the Mayan possibly being the most famous), this massage has been used to support fertility and to prepare the womb for pregnancy as well as to help in realigning the abdominal organs postpartum.

The upper abdominal work may help to release fascia and aid digestive problems. Seratonin, a hormone which contributes to your feeling of wellbeing and happiness, is secreted in the gastrointestinal tract, so massaging the abdomen enhances its production. This massage will also boost your immune health because about 80% of the immune system is based in our gut.

Aromatherapy

Holistic aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to promote and maintain health and wellbeing within the body, mind and spirit.

Essential oils are highly concentrated, volatile plant extracts comprising of hundreds of natural organic constituents. These oils carry various beneficial properties and natural scents of the plants they are derived from. Massage is a popular way to benefit from an essential oil blend. There is no one type of aromatherapy massage – a variety of techniques will be used during the treatment that are appropriate and beneficial for the client’s particular needs.

Following on from a consultation the appropriate essential oils will be chosen to use for the treatment. During the consultation the client will be encouraged to say what it is that they want from the treatment and which body areas they would like the practitioner to focus – the treatment is then tailored specifically to meet the client’s needs.

The benefits of aromatherapy massage are wide ranging including simple relaxation, relief from muscular aches and pains, releasing tension, improving sleep, increasing wellbeing and improving mood.

Holistic Massage

Holistic Massage means treating the ‘whole’ of the individual –  Mind, Body & Spirit.  The massage is tailored to the needs of the individual, taking in to account their  history, their emotional state and any pain or injuries.

Rather than performing the same set sequence of massage techniques on every single client, holistic massage means assessing the clients needs and then tailoring the massage for their personal fulfilment.

Swedish massage is the most commonly offered and best known type of massage. It was developed by a Swedish physiologist, Henri Peter Ling in 1812. It uses a firm but gentle pressure to improve the circulation, ease muscle aches and tension, improve flexibility and create relaxation.

Swedish massage is the foundation for other types of Western massage, including sports, deep tissue and aromatherapy.

100% Natural Cold Pressed Oils are used for the massage.  Sweet Almond Oil is a favourite used for it’s soothing and moisturising properties, though Sunflower oil is a good alternative for people with nut allergies.

How long your treatment is, is entirely up to you and can vary in length from half an hour to two hours. A simple back massage can be performed in half an hour, An hour will give you a more in depth back massage and selected other parts of the body, whilst you will need an hour and a half for a full body massage or two hours for a very in depth work full body treatment.

Sport & Remedial Massage

Sport massage was originally developed to help athletes prepare their body for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. Sports massage emphasizes prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons.  But you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit from sports massage. Sports massage is also good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion.  Your therapist will generally concentrates on a specific problem area. You will also be given advice on exercises that can help the problem after the treatment if appropriate.

Remedial massage is one of the most effective and readily available ways to prevent and treat muscle injuries, pain and soreness. Based on the fact that soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) respond to touch and that most pain is myofascial (soft tissue) in origin. Trigger points (sensitive points in muscles, which radiate or refer pain to various parts of the body) can mimic many conditions. Muscles not only move our joints, they stabilise them, and they provide armour for the internal organs, minor problems with these functions cause more pain than most people realise.

Although many clients who consult a remedial massage therapist have pain as a result of specific injuries (whiplash, falls, sports injuries, etc.), RSI (repetitive strain injuries) and other work-related problems, the vast majority originates in postural (structural) alignment problems that sometimes go back to childhood and adolescence.and lymph, particularly in the injured areas.

Thai Yoga massage

Thai Yoga Massage is an ancient form of general manipulation and therapeutic massage. For centuries it has treated the mental, physical and emotional imbalances of the body. The combination of Yoga, Reflexology and Acupressure makes it a unique healing art which is based on the theory of 72000 Energy Lines. When these become blocked, the energy becomes stagnant and the body loses its balance, allowing disease to set in.

Thai Massage is a form of passive Yoga where the practitioner applies deep pressure along the energy lines to free the body of tension blockages. Synchronized stretching movements not only promote flexibility, opening of joints and balancing of the muscles; they also massage the inner organs and increase blood oxygenation. While a slight degree of “good pain” might be felt where blockages are held, and at the end of a session both client and practitioner should feel relaxed and energized.

The osteopath works to gently realign the spinal and peripheral joints and the fascial compartments enveloping each organ, nerve, muscle and bone, to enable integrated healthy motion of the body as a whole. Osteopaths don’t look at symptoms in isolation but work with the interconnected structures of the body and take into account your past history, state of mind, overall health and other factors. Think of it as a big picture approach to health, balance and wellbeing. Using direct joint manipulation, deep soft tissue work, mobilisation and gentle cranial osteopathy we seek to restore optimum movement to the body, promote excellent blood flow, efficient fluid drainage and to leave our patients feeling terrific!

In the early 20th century a talented Osteopath, William G Sutherland, established the basis of Cranial Osteopathy. He posited that health was not only influenced by the mobility of the joints in the body but also by the small movements of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord and the flow of cerebrospinal fluid within them. This also extended to the fine layer of connective tissue known as fascia that surrounds all muscles and organs in the body.

Using a finely honed sense of touch and very gentle pressure it is possible to detect and release restrictions within this system and in so doing have far-reaching effects in releasing tension elsewhere in the body.

Cranial Osteopathy is relaxing and very gentle and so well-suited for babies and small children who may have unresolved tensions from birth that can unsettle or make them uncomfortable. Adults too can benefit often combining cranial work with more robust structural techniques.

Sound massage is a holistic treatment for body and mind, for deep relaxation and meditation. It facilitates “letting go” – both physically and mentally and contributes to health promotion: harmonisation, regeneration and vitalisation, reducing stress and anxiety.

Sound Massage has been developed through drawing on ancient eastern practises and modern scientific research into the effects of sound and frequencies. During an individual treatment, Himalayan singing bowls are placed directly onto the fully clothed body of the client and played by the practitioner to create soothing sounds and gentle vibrations. The combined sounds and vibrations flow through the body and induce a deep sense of meditative relaxation, which helps to de-stress mind and body.

Reflexology is a holistic therapy that aims to bring about balance by stimulating the client’s own innate healing processes. Depending on the client’s needs, a treatment can bring about a feeling of deep relaxation or can be energising.

Reflexology is the application of pressure to the client’s feet (hands, face or spine) to stimulate the nerve and circulatory pathways within the body. This pressure can have a corresponding effect on the organs or body systems linked by these pathways.

There are many health issues that Reflexology can help with.
*Improving concentration and focus
* Insomnia and sleep issues
*Painful or irregular menstruation
*Depression, stress, or anxiety

Regular Reflexology balances your body, mind and spirit as a whole.

A treatment plan suitable to you and your needs will be made to make sure you get the best out of your sessions. This may mean coming for a course of 6-8 sessions for more serious issues, or just once a month for general relaxation and well-being. You will have as many sessions as you need to achieve the goals you have for your health.

Face Reflexology
Face Reflexology gives an intense feeling of relaxation as well as doubling as a beauty treatment. Face Reflexology oxygenates and detoxifies the skin bringing vitality and generally a fresher look. It is often referred to as a natural mini face-lift.Face Reflexology combines the use of Acupressure points on the face, and facial massage techniques. Acupressure points treat the body as a whole, improve circulation, digestion, activate lymphatic system, and relax and de-stress the mind.

Fertility Reflexology
Stress is a complex condition that affects most parts of the body in some way and there is some evidence to suggest it can affect fertility. If you are trying to conceive, reflexology can support you and your partner through what can be a very stressful period of your life. Many clients who have received a diagnosis of unexplained fertility have experienced great frustration with no clear way forward.  Many say that having reflexology can help you feel as if you are still moving forward. Having reflexology will provide you with relaxation and stress reduction which in itself is beneficial for conception. If you are going into IVF, my sessions will help guide you through and I will work with you each step of the way amending your treatment plan and reflex points to correlate with your cycle and hormonal changes. These sessions will give you a moment of calm and feeling of support.

Hand Reflexology
Hand Reflexology is the same treatment as Foot Reflexology with similar benefits. The feet and the Hands reflect each other, so the effects are very similar. Some people find Foot Reflexology more powerful, and some Hand, every person and every treatment is different.  Hand Reflexology is suitable for those who cannot have Foot Reflexology due to contraindications that may prevent treatment such as injury or infection to foot. It is also effective for clients who have very ticklish, sensitive feet, or don’t enjoy the sensation of having their feet touched.

Hot Stone Reflexology
Using hot stones in reflexology is a perfect way to nurture the body and can really help the mind and body to unwind. The benefits of hot stone reflexology can include a reduction in muscle tension, increase relaxation and de-stress the body. Clients have found it to be a soothing, comforting feeling that leads to a release of tension and anxiety.

Pre and post pregnancy
During pregnancy maternity reflexology can be a great support to women and can improve your general well-being which is great for you and the baby. The sessions aim to optimise your physical and emotional health by working on specific reflex points on the feet and sometimes the hands. The benefits of maternity reflexology include re-balancing your hormones, improving your sleep before and after the birth, relaxation and allowing you some much needed time away from your busy life giving you time to focus on you and your growing baby.

At each trimester your treatment plan will change in order to address your needs during the differing periods of growth for your baby. You will also be offered lifestyle advice and support.

Spinal Reflexology
Spinal reflexology is a powerful form of treatment that is based on stimulating the spinal reflexes on the feet. During the sessions each vertebrae reflex is stimulated with the aim of identifying any nerve roots which are out of balance and helping them to open up.  It is a great way to work non-invasively on the spine to help reduce tension and to improve overall well-being.Hand and Face Reflexology

Reiki uses the natural energies that are all around us in order to provide healing. The practitioner is a channel for the energy, and is guided by the Reiki. The Reiki energy is channelled through palms of the Healer into the recipient. Each treatment is entirely unique, since the Reiki knows exactly what the recipient needs at that time. Therefor, each time you experience a Reiki healing, it will feel different. The strength of the flow changes for each individual, and depending on the needs of each individual at that exact time.
